About Us

The Critical Care service in Aberdeen is one of the busiest in Scotland treating around 1500 patients per year. We provide intensive care (ICU) and high dependency (HDU) across two units: ward 201 (formerly General ICU) and ward 106B (formerly Medical HDU). Both units are fully equiped to modern ICU standards with cutting edge life-support equipment, clinical information system, and highly trained staff. We admit patients from across Grampian, Orkney and Shetland, and from further afield for the specialist services we offer.

In addition to general intensive care for medical, surgical and trauma patients, we provide neurosurgical ICU for the north of Scotland. We are also the only extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centre in Scotland and participate in the UK network to offer this life-saving therapy to those in need.

We have a large team of over 150 doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, healthcare support workers and others working to provide high-quality care for our patients and their families.
